This goddess commands the winds with a breath.
I just forget to breathe occasionally in the face of your straight-jacket stare.

STAGE MAKE UP
Juggling lives in his palm
Skilfully
Captivating his audience
With a smile.
A raised eyebrow
Whispers ‘love me’
- Ringmaster of charm
Wondering how great his scope
For capturing hearts.
Just one more
To add to that shimmering collection
Of self worth.
- Wit scalpel sharp
He slices sound
And laughs away the pain.
One more gag
To silence the voice inside
And bind the...

wonderslikeiveneverseen asked: Hello Zoie :) I just wanted to say, you are an AMAZING actress, I've been watching The Royal and you're just so beautiful and talented! I never knew that you drew and wrote poems as well, they're so lovely and touching and your artwork...WOW! Okay, I better not let the message go to long! Lots of love and keep up the art, poetry and especially the lovely acting! Best wishes, Rebecca...

MORNING AFTER
Elated inflation
A feeling inside
Expanded body
To fit our minds’
Most terrified hopes
And fears and years
Of personal failures
Compounded by the thought
That this could be different
A seed growing
Bubble tight of oil slick light
Refracting the hope in your eyes
Devastating beauty
But money paid
I reach out
Pin-fingered
Prodded
Popped
Deflated elation
And a withered...

Sonnet
As in a waking dream you lie in wait
To ambush all my thoughts at ev’ry turn.
Your absence felt yet not by others seen,
A grief close guarded, one which I must learn
To love, or live, or laugh at power held
When mind and heart, nay all that I may be
Is lost in images of your sweet eye
And all my love doth wing itself to thee.
And yet a single word from thy sweet lips
Doth temper all...

Clear turquoise
viscous
weightless here
sinking, yet gliding
Each thrash slowed
to elegance
hair drifting, searching
sun dappled blondes
echoing light
through liquid depths
Each cry formed
of a thousand glinting bubbles
catching the light
and drifting air-ward
dancing
Drowning in beauty
delicate hands unclasp
Allow
Open
Orchestrate their journey
like wings slicing through air
they float...

He loves her when she is independent; He does not love her when she does not need him.
She loves him when he is vulnerable; She does not love him when he is a child.
He loves her when she smiles; He does not love her when she puts on a brave face. She loves him when he knows the point; She does not love him when he is making a point. He loves her when he has time; He does not love her when...

THE WAITING ROOM
(with thanks to the young couple in cheltenham station waiting room)
A heaving sigh
Loaded
With intent.
To push, annoy,
To make something known.
The hurt.
A sigh which speaks.
Says ‘why’ more eloquently than his language ever could.
And her answer is a tear.
And now they are really talking.
-
Both are hurting
Both have hurt
With weapons of dismissal and apathy
And a selfish lack of...

Softly spoken, full and silent I arrive
My substance shown in space
A small hand reaching for the unknown
To touch
You:
My link to the feminine,
To all things tangible.
I suckle your comfort that all will be well.
A new beginning
Marks a new chapter in what was.
Unsure
Tired
Overwhelmed
I close down to rest inside,
Find my voice and my bearings.
Drifting in and out
To and fro
...

BUTTERFLY
Despite the hope of being seen
Sprung
After time
Cocoon held
Bathed in the lethe of solitude
And the darkness inside
These colours glisten with impermanence
All too fleeting on Summer breezes.
In the Autumn of a life short lived
Colours fade
The air bruises
With the cry of leaves
Rustling their deafening lament
Shaking
With anger
And the grief
Of being so utterly misunderstood

MISSING YOU.
Wrestling with consciousness
I fight to slip back
To the warm dark halflight
Of restful oblivion.
Here you wait in my shadows;
Here I am seen in the dark;
Here I am held, throbbing with need
To love
And be loved.
And wrestling with consciousness
I catch the thread of dreams
And pull myself back
To you
Unravelling the daylight
And the empty space beside me.

SWARM
The swarm arrived
Silent
As black rain.
No tin roof cry
Or wail of pity;
Doubt cloud
Gathering
To die,
Each speck uttering
An unspeakable secret
To the night air;
A drone to flee from.
And so I sit amidst bees
And listen to my fear
Until I understand
What they are here to say to me
On dying breath…
“Toughen up princess”.

OTHER HALF
With you away I treat myself
to your half of the bed;
stretch to feel the space (within myself)
which has been so full of you
I did not recognise it as mine.
I am bigger than I thought.
On this side you have left the trace
of your regard for me.
On this side I am fuller, stronger,
more certain and peaceful.
And the space is not empty,
but filled
with love.
With so much of me here,
no...

WHEN LOVE IS LOST
When love is lost a space remains,
A nothing
Shaped like the past
And echoing of smiles and laughter.
A loss that would be tangible
If only you could bear to reach out
And touch it.
Deafened by the silence of that which is broken
And waiting for the aftershock to subside,
From the core of your shaken self-belief
Comes the whisper,
“You were wrong.”
And somewhere far away in the dark
A...

ACCIDENTAL MATRICIDE
Mucus held
Innocent babe
Umbilicus thin as communion wafer
A thousand candles flicker
As she takes a bite of her mother’s body
And tastes the rich dark guilt of sacrifice
-
Witnessed by the bone-white moon
Whose barren face
Ashen
Crying the tides with white knuckle grief
Casts down the borrowed light of its Medusa-gaze upon church spires
And longs for forgiveness
-

Beware my sweet the city's din; the fairytale, it...
Though I follow you silent
Through heavy streets,
Clinging to the shadows like night to dawn,
You sense my presence.
The subtle backward glance;
A knowing smile flickers and wanes.
Your heady scent lingers,
Performing a vision of you in your footfalls.
Countless images.
All lies.
Until in some darkened city cove
We anchor in blissful blood and struggle,
Red cloth ripped,
...

HANGING ON
I hang my love on you, an empty garment
Offering the promise of warmth.
Substantial, woollen, pure silk lined and cool
To the skin, it will not scratch.
A classic cut.
Simple.
Nothing flashy. A little heavy for this time of year.
A garment your mother would approve of.
But you say you are warm enough
And I watch it slide to the floor like a tear
Dashed.
